The Open Cupboard

The Open Cupboard is an all volunteer food shelf supported largely by community donations.  It was established in February, 1993 by a local community member.  It started out in a 3 room office and is now housed in a new 3000 sq foot building because of great community support.  We are divided into three sections, monthly, weekly and household items.  In 2025, the food shelf served 754 families (1,793 people) in our monthly area and over 7000 people in our weekly area.  We distributed over 120,000 lbs of food.. 

Throughout the last couple years we have strived to serve everyone with dignity and respect.  We understand everyone is in a different chapter of life and we want to help make it easier by reducing food insecurity.  One of the ways we help is by providing a meal of the month.  In addition to the standard food staples we provide a meal kit that includes a meat, vegetable, dessert and a easy to follow recipe.  This allows people a day to not think about what they are going to cook but how they can enjoy what they are going to cook.  we welcome all to come in and get weekly produce, rescued food, bread and bakery items as well as their monthly food allocation.  

In addition we have a Back Pack program for all 4 of the Osceola schools.  Each week a backpack goes home with 7 items of food. Once a month each family receives a coupon for 1 gallon of milk and a coupon for 1lb. of ground meat.  We currently service 48 backpacks a week.  We also send snacks into the office for kids to get if they forgot to bring a snack or need something extra so they are not hangry.  

In 2026, we helped 22 children with school supplies providing everything on their school list including a graphing calculator.  Families came in and got to choose their backpack color, notebooks and pencils.

The Open Cupboard also offers free clothing and household items. We are accepting clothing or household items at this time but no furniture or toys.  This area is maintained by local volunteers and has helped many community members prepare for interviews and or dress for the weather. 

The Open Cupboard is open Monday and Wednesday from 9-12 and Thursday 11-6pm.  We encourage anyone who would like to see our facility to stop in during open hours and we will be happy to give you an overview of our programs.
